Chinese Medicine is a traditional form of health care that has been used for thousands of years in China, however over the last 50 years it has spread widely throughout the world as modern society has begun to realise its wonders and potential.

The basis of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture is centred on harmonising the body’s natural rhythms in accordance with the delicate balance of energy within.

Over 4000 years ago, wise and admired Chinese physicians discovered points on the human body that when stimulated correspond with the healing of particular illnesses. Over time these points were tried and tested and the subsequent discoveries recorded. Today we call these points acupuncture points, and the channels that the energy flows along meridians.

Moxabustion is the application of heat to facilitate the flow of energy or Qi in the meridians and to expel the accumulation of cold, which often causes pain and discomfort. This is done by burning a specific herb called Chinese mugwort, or aiye.

Cupping is used to release muscle tension and stiffness by drawing fresh blood to areas which have been previously starved of nutrients due to continual muscular and vascular contraction. Round glass cups are quickly heated and then applied to the affected area which draws up the skin to create a suction cup like effect which is very relaxing as it releases the muscular tension.

Tuina (Chinese Massage) is an invigorating hands-on body treatment which moves the energy in the meridians. It treats both acute and chronic disease which may be of a muscular or non-muscular nature. Techniques such as rolling, pressing and kneading are used to stimulate acupressure points, improve Qi flow and bring the body to balance.

Chinese and Western Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine is the original form of medicine that our ancestors have used for hundreds of thousands of years, and over the years as valuable scientific research is done, it has become more and more successful, efficacious and safe.

When consulting with Dr. Shirley you will uniquely benefit from both Western and Eastern Traditional Herbal Medicine practice due to the particular combination of university degrees that Dr. Shirley has completed.

Herbal medicine comes in many forms; from the raw herbs that must be decocted for hours for the dedicated and disciplined patient (who has a non-existent gag-reflex!) to the tablets and ready made powders for the busy but hard-working, modern-day patient (who prefers the more palatable options!).

Pricing of herbs varies greatly, but what is always sure is that Dr. Shirley ensures it is cost effective and tailors it to any budget, even one that is $0 as “food as medicine” can often be just as effective for everyday maintenance.
